The Lands End signpost

 

LANDS END...the magnificent cliffs with their seabirds and wild flowers, the surge of the powerful Atlantic and the clean, clear air make Land’s End very special. And you may even be lucky enough to see the seals! Have your photograph taken at the signpost!

 

Cotehele House
Cothele House - National Trust Property - Cotehele was mainly built between 1485 and 1627 and was a home of the Edgcumbe family for centuries. Its granite and slatestone walls contain intimate chambers adorned with tapestries, original furniture and armour.

 

 

Cornish Tin ingot
Blue Hills Tin Streamers at St Agnes, near Truro. See the complete tin extraction process from raw ore to finished tin - done the old C19th way - including 'stamping' and 'panning'!

 

 

Charlestown harbour

Cornish Mining Heritage Centre. Pumps and the houses for the engines that drove the pumps were a necessary part of mining. These engine houses were the sturdiest buildings in the mines, as they had both to house the machinery and support the massive beam that worked the pump.

Lanhydrock House
Lanhydrock House, near Bodmin, one of the most fascinating late 19th-century houses in Britain, full of period atmosphere and the trappings of a high Victorian country house.

 

 

Cable & Wireless
The Marine Telegraphy Museum is at Porthcurnow, near Landsend, where the British end of the first all submarine cable to Bombay was brought ashore in 1870. For the following 100 years Porthcurno remained a working telegraph station, linking Britain with the rest of the world.

 

 

Minack Theatre - late night performance
The Minack open air Theatre near Landsend is a must. "Minack" in Cornish means a rocky place and until the 1930’s the gulls had this gorse filled gully to themselves and the cliffs echoed to the cries of gulls not actors. Spectacular! You could even book to see a performsnce."

 

 

Mount Edgcumbe House
Mount Edgcumbe House, in Cornwall, overlooking Drakes Island and Plymouth Sound was built by Sir Richard Edgcumbe in his deer park here in 1547-53. This magnificent Tudor House survived a direct hit by bombs in 1941. Now fully restored by the Earl of Edgcumbe.

 

 

National Maritime Museum Cornwall
The National Maritime Museum at Falmouth. Housed in an award winning building on the Falmouth quayside, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall transports you into the world of small boats and Cornish maritime history.

 

 

Pendennis Castle, Falmouth
Pendennis Castle, Falmouth, a Cornish fortress, ready for military action since Henry VIII. Pendennis and its sister, St Mawes Castle, face each other across the mouth of the River Fal. Constructed circa 1540, they were built by Henry VIII.

 

 

Royal Cornwall Museum
The Royal Cornwall Museum has a permanent display on the history of Cornwall from the Stone Age to the present day, the natural history of Cornwall, a world famous collection of minerals, a pre-eminent collection of ceramics, and a changing display of fine and decorative art.

 

 

St Michaels Mount
St Michael's Mount...this magical island is the jewel in Cornwall's crown, and a must for every visitor to Cornwall...visited by the Phoenicians circa 2500 years ago to trade wine for tin, once the monastic little brother of Mont St. Michel in Normandy........

Jamaica Inn
Daphne du Maurier's Jamaica Inn in the centre of Bodmin Moor. Scene of dastardly deeds and smuggling in her famous novel. Visit it and image smugglers, ponies with muffled hooves - and barrels of French brandy being carried through the foggy night!
