Garden Tour Five Starting from Truro ... but we can start at your hotel/B&B from anywhere in Cornwall ... we proceed to St Ives and Penzance, sight-seeing en route and in St Ives, including a look at the St Ives Tate Gallery, the Egyptian House in Penzance ... and on to St Michaels Mount for their 10.00 o'clock opening (garden opens at 10am; house opens at 10.30am).
St. Michael's Mount more than holds its own in the gardening sphere with an extraordinary sub-tropical Mediterranean garden cleverly protected from the wind by pines, Holm oaks and shubberies of plants tolerant to salt, such as escallonia, hebe, tamarisk, fuschia and Sea Buckthorn found on the steep ascent to the castle. Near the summit overlooking the southern slopes and favoured by the sun, good drainage and lack of frosts are agapanthus, aloes and kniphofias sheltering amongst the huge granite boulders, together with many other exotic plants including aeoniums, pelargoniums, callistemons, yuccas, phormiums and other plants usually only found in glasshouses. A unique experience and well worth a visit.

We now stop for lunch at somewhere appropriate, lots of places to choose from ... your choice ... and after lunch travel just a short distance to Trengwainton Garden, near Penzance.
At Trengwainton a very mild climate and a renowned collection of trees & shrubs makes it a plantsman’s dream-garden. Many of the species growing here originate from plant-hunting expeditions on the 1920s, and the garden includes some of the largest tree ferns in the West Country. The magnolia garden with champion specimens opens in March & April. A renowned feature of Trengwainton is the series of walled gardens with unique sloping beds where restoration is planned. Beyond the walled gardens, visitors can follow the stream & meandering paths up to a terrace with summerhouses, a slate toposcope & glorious views over Mount’s Bay. Dogs on leads are welcome. If time, energy and enthusiasm allow, return to Truro (or where you are staying) via
