House Tour Five
Cornish House Tour Five Starting from Truro ... but we can start at your hotel/B&B from anywhere in Cornwall ... we go to Fowey, scenic ancient harbour and home to the late Daphne du Maurier, on to Looe and Antony House on the River Lynher near Torpoint. (visit Antony House ... visiting times vary ).
Antony House was constructed between 1711-1721 for Sir William Carew whose family had owned the estate since 1492. The house stands on a peninsular formed by the confluence of two estuaries - the River Tamar to the east and the river Lynher to the north with the sea forming the southern edge. Antony House features some exceptional furnishings. A splendid collection of portraits includes examples of works by Reynolds and a painting of Charles I at his trial. There are 25 acres of gardens landscaped by the renowned Georgian garden designer Humphrey Repton, and also some 50 acres of natural woodland to explore.
~~~
 Allow between 1.5 and 2.5 hours at Antony House.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For lunch we have several options.
OPTION ONE: Eat at Antony House. OPTION TWO: Eat at the Rising Sun at Cawsand ... good food, good beer and a lovely setting! OPTION THREE: Eat at Mount Edgcumbe ... our second house today.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our second house today is Mount Edgcumbe. Mount Edgcumbe is the stunning Tudor home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. The house is located on a peninsular that extends into the River Tamar, giving Edgcumbe and the surrounding grounds some spectacular views over Plymouth Sound, one of England's finest natural harbours. In the Second World War, the house was destroyed by German bombers during the 1941 Blitz on Plymouth. The house was left as a derelict shell until 1958, when Adrian Gilbert Scott was commissioned by the 6th Earl to rebuild it. ( Visit a website for Edgcumbe House - visiting times vary)
~~~
Allow between 1.5 and 3 hours at Edgcumbe House.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If time, energy and enthusiasm allow, return to Truro (or where you are staying) via Cremyll, Kingsand, Cawsand, Freathy, Seaton and the Looe Valley (to complete your sight seeing for the day!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
